Scales are important to learn because they're the alphabet of music. If you don't know the alphabet of any langauge, it can be difficult to "spell" words to construct sentences. Music is a form of communication. When you create music, you are telling a melodic story with a harmonic "backdrop!"

To be able to write songs, you must be able to create a melody and accompanying harmony. As stated earlier, my program emphasizes the study of chord progressions, thus allowing you to create music that appeals to your taste. You won't be a "slave to sheet music!"

My "four-step" approach to chord building... why!
Why? I'll tell you.
This step-by-step approach is an organized, structured approach.
Although it does require discipline and daily application, it offers you the chance to learn modern harmony many times faster than previously possible.
It may seem overly involved to think through four steps to play a chord.
As a beginning student, you may try to learn chords visually without the necessary intellectual control. However, don't forget that there are hundreds of chords.
If you want to move really fast, you must be organized.
The most important thing of all, besides the intellectual control that these four steps give you, is that you learn to think of the notes of a chord in terms of numbers: root, 3rd, 5th, 7th. This is the professional approach.
The opposite approach, thinking of the notes in terms of their letter names, C, E, G, B will give you an amateurish, inefficient control of the keyboard, even after years of effort.
Be original... create your own voicings,
determined by the "size" of your hands!
That's right. Once you learn a chord, be creative by constructing variations of that chord that feels good to you. This is how you create your sound!
The truth is that your particular "sound" on the instrument will have a lot to do with how and what you play. I've had many students come to me, asking for my voicings, and I try to encourage them to try to find their own.
Sometimes copied voicings don't "ring" right but sound better with your touch by adding or subtracting notes from them. I found this to be true for me whenever I'm copying another artist's voicings.
Don't worry about challenging yourself. Who cares what grade level your music is? Just play the melody so beautifully that everyone wants to hum along. This is how you play piano like a pro!
Here's How to Play Piano Quickly...
You must practice chord progressions. Basically, a song's harmony changes from measure to measure.
Believe me, you don't have to learn how to read music to play the piano, but you must know your chords. And when you know your chords, you can begin to create your own sound on the piano.
